In Plain View (2022) evolved from a previous paragraph project that explored advanced typographic variables to convey a heightened sensitivity to rhythm, texture, and readability in typesetting. For this project, the challenge was to create multiple typographic variations of the previous paragraph project to explore its visual structure and uncover new formal possibilities. I expanded upon this through text-based explorations of counterforms, figure-ground relationships, and other silent typographic elements that are often overlooked. Under the guidance of Clinical Professor Andrew Weed, a typesetter trained under Wolfgang Weingart, I refined the paragraph through iterative typesetting and visual translation. This process culminated in a handbound booklet where counterforms rose to the foreground while the original letterforms receded. Gradually, the source paragraph would be revealed at the conclusion of the booklet. The final result is a visual narrative that expresses my fascination with irregular shapes, typography, unnoticed beauty, and hidden structures. Ultimately demonstrating the expressive potential of typographic details when pushed beyond their conventional frameworks.
